ILM Leadership Pathway
ILM Leadership & Management
A structured, internationally recognised development route from a first supervisory role through to executive leadership — to be delivered by Britannia Elite under the City & Guilds ILM framework, with centre approval in progress.
Leadership capability, built level by level
The ILM Leadership Pathway gives leaders a clear, progressive framework that strengthens leadership behaviours, decision-making, communication and organisational impact. Each level is aligned to a real job role — from team leaders and first-line managers through to senior directors and chief executives — so learning is relevant, practical and immediately applicable in the workplace.
The pathway is built for working professionals. Learners can study through web-based, blended or classroom delivery, in a way that fits their schedule, location and preferred learning style — making it well suited to organisations with diverse teams, international staff or shift-based operations.
A UK qualification, recognised internationally
ILM has been part of City & Guilds since 2001 and is the UK’s leading provider of leadership and management qualifications. Internationally, they are delivered through City & Guilds-approved centres, training providers and employers, and over one million managers have taken an ILM qualification.
Awarding & recognition
ILM qualifications are awarded by City & Guilds Limited under the ILM brand, are UK-regulated by Ofqual, and are recognised internationally. City & Guilds Limited (Company No. 16513878) is the Awarding Organisation for ILM qualifications; City & Guilds and ILM are trademarks of City & Guilds Limited. ILM operates across eight global regions — including Africa, the Middle East, ASEAN, East Asia, India, South Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas, and the Pacific.
Learners also receive complimentary studying membership of The Institute of Leadership, and are issued digital credentials on completion to share their achievement online.
Centre approval. Britannia Elite is completing its approval as a City & Guilds ILM centre. ILM qualifications will be delivered and certificated on confirmation of that approval.
Three formats at every level
Internationally, ILM qualifications are available in three formats at each level. Each represents the depth and breadth of learning, so learners and organisations can choose the right level of commitment.
| Format | What it is | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Award | The shortest and most concise qualification, focused on developing a specific leadership skill or behaviour. | New leaders, or targeted, high-impact upskilling without a long study commitment. |
| Certificate | A broader base of leadership and management knowledge and skills, across more units than an Award. | Developing well-rounded team leaders and managers; the most popular structured route. |
| Diploma | The most comprehensive qualification, with the widest coverage and the deepest level of study. | Managers responsible for people, resources and operations; building leadership capability in depth. |

ILM within our training programmes
Britannia Elite embeds ILM qualifications within its vocational training. The Vigilant Defender and Athena programmes can be entered at any level, so a learner is enrolled on the ILM award set for the level they are studying — provided they already hold a suitable level of English. The mapping is set out below.
| Programme | Embedded ILM qualification |
|---|---|
| Vigilant Defender / Athena — Level 2 and Level 3 | ILM Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills |
| Vigilant Defender — Level 4 | ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management |
